Saudi Arabia 'plans' 2km-tall world's tallest tower, more than twice the size of Burj Khalifa
"Contractors who have priced mega-tall towers in the region say that depending on the final design, the 2km-tall structure could cost about $5 billion to build," the report said.
“A design competition is underway with a $1 million entry fee for the record tower,” according to MEED sources.
According to sources, around eight companies have been approached for the competition.
Some of the world's leading architecture firms are collaborating and were selected for the project based on their previous work on iconic structures and mega-tall towers around the world.
Likely participants include US firms Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and Gensler.
France's Egis and Dubai's Killa Design are also competing for the offer.
The proposed Riyadh High Tower is just one of many influential projects proposed for the northern outskirts of the city, west of the existing King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
A feasibility assessment of the development was carried out by EY, a global consultancy that falls under the kingdom's master plan, the report said.

According to reports from the MEED agency, plans are currently being worked on in Saudi Arabia for a skyscraper that will become the tallest building in the world.
Estimated to be 2km tall, the new mega-project will be more than double the height of the world's tallest building - Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which stands at 828m when completed.
The tower will be part of an 18 sq km development in Riyadh; a site adjacent to King Khalid International Airport has reportedly been identified for construction.
According to contractors and based on the prices of existing towers in the region, the final construction could cost about $5 billion.
According to sources close to the project, a design competition was also announced inviting developers, architects, construction specialists and project managers to participate and design the mega building.
Several architectural firms have been brought in to contribute to the project in its early stages, reports say, with names such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill Architecture said to be involved.
The Kingdom is currently witnessing a mega-project boom with many projects in the pipeline and is estimated to become the largest construction site in the world by 2030.
