Avatar sequel leads in N.America, passes $1 billion globally

"Avatar: The approach of Water" took in $82.4 million in North America this holiday weekend, moving past the $1 billion worldwide total in a near-record time, according to trade watchers on Sunday.

The sci-fi film's four-day domestic run brought its domestic total to $440.5 million, on top of the $957 million earned overseas; only half a dozen films have crossed the $1 billion mark in their first time period.

But director James Cameron calculated that a big-budget 20th-century film had to make twice as much to simply break even. the first "Avatar" grossed a very record $2.9 billion.

In second place at North Yankee theaters, Universal's "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," a computer-animated spinoff of the popular "Shrek" franchise, welcomed the family. The amount from Friday to Monday took $22 million.

Another successful sequel, Disney's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," earned $6.5 million in third place; its domestic total rose to $439.6 million in its eighth week.

In fourth place was the Sony biopic "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Some" with $5.4 million. The deceased star was portrayed by English actress Noemi Ackie.

And in fifth place was Paramount's comedy-drama "Babylon" with $3.6 million. Brad Pitt has teamed up with star Margot Robbie in director Damien Chazelle's outrageous tribute to Hollywood's early brawl with the transition from silent films to talkies.

Rounding out the top ten were:

"A Violent Night" ($2.8 million)

"The Whale" ($1.8 million)

"The Fabelmans" ($1.6 million)

"Menu" ($1.4 million)

"Strange World" ($747,000)..AFP
